Local roundup: Locals have success at tough Powerade wrestling tournament (2024)

The Powerade Tournament at Canon McMillan features some of the top wrestlers throughout the state and region, and it’s no surprise area wrestlers fared well on Day 1 of the three-day tournament.

An all-area quarterfinal matchup was underway at 121 pounds on Thursday night as Williamsport standout Cael Nasdeo defeated Montoursville stud Branden Wentzel in a solid contest via decision, 6-4, to advance to the semifinals and drop Wentzel into the consolation bracket. Nasdeo advanced to the quarterfinals with a 17-2, 2:00 technical fall against Eastside, South Carolina’s Chris Thompson. Wentzel advanced by defeating Cranberry’s Elijah Brosius with an 11-5 decision.

At 133, Central Mountain’s Dalton Perry picked up a decision win against Muncy standout Scott Johnson, 8-3, sudden victory. Central Mountain’s Luke Simcox won in the quarterfinals at 139 with a 6-0 decision over Hickory’s Connor Saylor.

At 215, Muncy’s Austin Johnson pinned Southern Regional, New Jersey’s Riley O’Boyle in 90 seconds to advance.

In the consolation bracket, Montoursville’s Teli Bobotas fell at 107 to Penn Trafford’s Dylan Barrett, 4-2, sudden victory, to be eliminated from medal contention. He won against For LeBoeuf’s Brady Bowers, 5-1, in the elimination bracket prior to the loss to Barrett.

Montgomery’s wrestling team had success at the Neil Turner Memorial tournament. In addition to earning his 100th career win, Montgomery’s Conner Harer was named the tournament’s Outstanding Wrestler after taking the title at 152 pounds.

Montgomery’s Brandt Harer, a freshman, won at 121 and Caden Finck took third at 172.

Jersey Shore’s Brock Weiss won the title at 127 thanks to winning via decision, 9-2. The Bulldogs’ Hadyn Packer won his bout against Mifflin County’s Truitt Davis by pinning him in 44 seconds at 215, but lost in the semifinals to Salesianum’s Max Agresti by decision, 3-0.

At the Jim Thorpe Christmas Tournament, Hughesville had success throughout its lineup. The Spartans’ Conor Knight had success at 139 by finishing third. He was pinned by North Schuylkill’s Jimmy Weikel in 29 seconds. Knight posted a pin over East Stroudsburg Area’s Ivan Laubach in the consolation semifinals. Another third-place finisher was Keagan Smith at 152. Smith defeated Germantown Academy’s Jacob Sasson via decision, 4-3, to take third.

Wyatt Gavitt also took third for the Spartans at 160 when he won a close contest via decision, 1-0, against Upper Dauphin’s Matthew Latshaw. He also won a narrow match against Panther Valley’s Riyell Wann in the consolation semifinals via decision, 2-0.

Mason Mordan was also a medalist for Hughesville as he took fifth after defeating North Schuylkill’s Zander McElhenny via decision, 4-3, at 145.

Chase Snyder took seventh by pinning Tamaqua’s Aiden Schlier in 3:41.

• Katie Ryder scored a career-high 16 points and fueled a stingy defense as Loyalsock defeated Nantico*ke and captured the Berwick Christmas Tournament championship in girls basketball. Izzy Dadzie filled up the stat sheet with eight points, five rebounds, five assists and five steals as Loyalsock (7-1) won its fifth straight game.

Alaina Dadzie pulled down 11 rebounds and Natayah Abdul-Hakim added three assists.

Sheiana Tutler scored a game-high 19 points and added eight rebounds as St. John Neumann went on the road and defeated Wellsboro, 51-32. Gigi Parlante produced her second straight double-double, going for 14 points and 14 rebounds. Lizzie Weller added seven points and Lily Reid six rebounds. Paige Logsdon scored 13 points for Wellsboro.

Falin Reynolds scored a game-high 15 points and added six rebounds but Montgomery could not overcome a 13-point halftime deficit as Midd-West defeated it 37-26 in the semifinals of the Dionna Satteson Christmas Tournament. Kayana Walters pulled down nine rebounds and freshman Madisyn Miller made seven steals for the Red Raiders, who will play Milton in Fridayás consolation game.

Aleigha Rieppel scored 10 points but Mount Carmel defeated South Williamsport 45-35 in a rematch of last yearás Class AA state quarterfinal. Piper Minier added nine and Lacey Kriebel eight. The Mounties (5-4) trailed 12-9 after a quarter before the Tornadoes (8-1) built a 12-point lead entering the fourth. Alyssa Reisinger scored 17 for Mount Carmel.

Millville held off North Penn-Liberty, 36-32. Arianna Thompson scored 12 for Liberty, which stayed close in the game through all four quarters.

Williamson edged Northern Potter, 38-27. Taylor Rae Jones had a monster game, scoring 20 points to help keep Williamson in the contest.

Lewisburg cruised easily past Mifflinbug by 30 points as Maddie Materne scored 14 points and Sophie Kilbride added 10. The Green Dragons led 16-5 after the first quarter and held the Wildcats scoreless in the fourth.

• On the same day he earned all-state football honors, Jaylen Andrews scored a game-high 23 points and helped Loyalsock defeat Perry Traditional, 66-33, in the consolation game of the State College Tournament in boys basketball.

Gage Patterson also had a big game, scoring a career-high 21 points. Nate Bauman added 10 as Loyalsock (3-3) snapped a three-game losing streak.

Mason Sheelsey scored 17 points and Cooper Wilkins totaled 12 points and seven rebounds, helping Warrior Run defeat Line Mountain, 57-48. Carter Marr added 10 points and six assists, helping Warrior Run (4-3) win for the fourth time in six games. Freshman Aiden McKee had nine points and 11 rebounds, while Ryan Newton produced eight points and seven rebounds.
